Autumn Wine Showcase

September 23rd, 2011 by Alan A. Barone

Our Autumn Wine Preview took place last week in the Wine Bar, where we featured sixteen new wines to taste, compiled notes and determined our group’s responses.  We chose wines that would  complement the flavors and ingredients of autumn recipes.  Admittedly, there are many more wines that would easily fit the category, but we felt that these were at least an exemplary sampling for the season.

Our objective for this type of event is multi-purposed.  While polling our guest’s likes and dislikes, I am able to tailor the next wine list to some of their choices, as well as to increase our focus on seasonal food and wine pairings.  It also provides for everyone a chance to preview some of the new wines of various styles and that are readily available in our area at different price points. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to thank our loyal wine community for their interest and support.  Additionally, I would like to recognize Paul, from The Cheese Shop in Centerbrook for providing our group with a lavish and appropriate  array of cheeses that matched perfectly with our autumn selections.

Our wines were showcased at four tables with the following themes:  1. Autumnal Whites  2.Wild and Earthy Pinot Noir 3. Cool Weather Reds  4. Robust & Hearty Italian Reds.

Although it was a very close race, please enjoy the (somewhat official) winners in each category, along with some tasting notes and approximate pricing for each:

1.  2010 Chateau Ste. Michelle Harvest Select Riesling

Offers rich flavors of ripe peach, with lighter tones of honey and tea. A touch of sweetness but, with balanced acidity to keep the wine in harmony. $9.00

2. 2009 Greg Norman Pinot Noir, California

Aromas of sweet strawberry with floral, mushroom notes. Subtle  flavors of black cherry and strawberry, mineral and earth, with a rich mouth feel.  $22.00

3.  2008 Fetish The Watcher Shiraz, Barossa Valley

Big blackberry fruit and spice aromas carry-over to the palate with of vanilla and oak spice undertones. Very smooth tannins and full finish.$26.00

4. 2008 Prelius Cabernet Sauvignon, Tuscany

A rich, powerful red with black currant, plum and cedar aromas and flavors with good structure and an herbal accent on the finish.  $20.00

Hi Alan, I was at the wine sampling last night 10/20/11. It was wonderful. Congrats to you and the chef . I am very interested in finding the Pinot you showcased. Can I get it around here or do I get it from the vintner? I googled the site SCV vineyard but found multiple 2009 Pinots. Can you tell me which one we had? Thank you for helping I look forward to the upcoming events. Sincerely, Linda Hunt

  2. Thank you, Linda. The wine is 2009 Sonoma Coast Vineyards, Freestone Hills and it may be available on-line from the winery. It has limited availability in our area, but you may also ask your local wine retailer. They should be able to provide it for you. Please have them act rather quickly and let me know if I may be of further assistance. Cheers!
