Remembering 9/11September 11th, 2011 by geoffreypaul
September 11th, 2001 was a Tuesday. Most of our staff showed up that day not knowing what to expect. Many went home again as we closed the dining rooms. The Taproom staff hung a large American flag over the bar and stayed open. The Taproom was a very somber place. ~ On Saturday, we had a discussion…”should we have the banjo band back?” “will people want entertainment?” “will people come out?”…..well, we did…and the people did. The Taproom was packed that evening as people finally left their homes and their televisions, escaping the horrible images if only for a night. It seems many people had reached the point that they needed to gather and find comfort in each other and in a familiar setting….The banjo band started…but rather than play their usual set, the band began playing patriotic songs…”America the Beautiful”, “The Star Spangled Banner”, “God Bless America” and so on without stopping. The crowd stood, raised their glasses, and sang. I have never seen so many people cry. Something about the comfort of that room, those familiar songs and the friends and strangers gathered provided hope…and reminded each of us what a gift it was to be an American. God Bless America. In memoriam 09-11-01.
