We enthusiastically support this nationwide celebration of "Handmade in America."
The Griswold Inn Store has a high regard for America’s craft traditions and innovations. We showcase over 100 American artisans, with a significant number from New England – many from Connecticut!  We celebrate craft and the men and women who passionately create with care, skill and ingenuity. Examples of “early” craft, whose roots trace back to Colonial America, and more “contemporary” interpretations of traditional craft are highlighted throughout The Store. Products in glass, ceramics, paper, wood, textiles, metal as well as comestibles, range from the functional to the purely decorative and delicious!
We hope you will join us in honoring the tradition of American Craft.

Saturday, October 8th, 2:30-5:30 ~ Meet Guest Artist Richard Morgan

We are delighted to have native Nutmegger and fine craftsman Richard Morgan as our guest to kick off American Craft Week. Richard will showcase his finely-crafted decoys in store and, weather permitting, Richard may also be carving just outside our door. This is an opportunity to get an up-close look of his extensive collection which may also be purchased on site. Decoys make a wonderful gift for the nature enthusiast or as a decorative object for anyone who appreciates fine craft. The price for these authentic reproductions is surprisingly reasonable, ranging from $25 for the smallest birds up to $110 for the largest.

Richard's work epitomizes the spirit of American Craft as he honors the craftmanship of the past through his "contemporary" work. Carving decoys out of native woods, he carefully paints them to give an aged look. Featured in numerous books, magazines and the cover of an L.L. Bean catalog, these sought-after collectibles may be found in fine shops and galleries throughout the country. We are proud to be among them. :)

Reliquary boxes, crafted from heavy-gauge copper by artisan Grace Gunning, feature varied whimsical images on their lids. Each are signed and dated and lined in velvet to protect one's treasures. They are at once "traditional, contemporary and whimsical". Although Grace employs old-style techniques to create these unusual boxes - hand-run 18th and 19th century machines are used in their construction - they evoke both a Victorian and contemporary vibe. Certainly they are curious!
