The Process - The "film" is prepared by flowing collodion - a mixture of gun cotton, ether and alcohol - onto a clean tin plate. The plate is then sensitized with silver nitrate in the dark, loaded in the camera and exposed when the lens cap is removed. The plate is developed with iron sulfite in a nearby dark tent. Dole & Sons have less than 10 minutes to complete the process while the coating is wet or the image will be lost.
