British Raid on Essex 1814 -2014 Bicentennial Commemoration

May 10th ~ Essex, an officially recognized battle site on the State Register of Historic Places, will commemorate the anniversary of the British Raid on Essex, a significant historical event which took place in our charming seaport town 200 years ago. A full roster of associated activities is planned: re-enactments throughout the town, narrated boating excursions on the Connecticut River, historic walking tours, special exhibits, period teas, dinners and musical events. Whether you are inside the doors of The Griswold Inn, just outside on historic Main Street or exploring the local area, there is an extraordinary variety of Things To Do. 1814 Tavern Night

Tavern Night in the atmospheric 'Gris" will feature an evening of Sea Shanties by The Jovial Crew. The spirited “Crew” sings and plays melodies of the sea, tavern and shore. Enjoy 1814 inspired libations while served by costumed wait staff. See Gris Events Calendar for more or call 860.767.1776.

A Musical Evening 1814 Style May 9

Musicians Morneault and Spencer bring The Griswold Inn's 1801 Tap Room to life with music of the era. A capella harmonies and other arrangements with a variety of instruments including mandolin, guitar and banjo, will bring the atmospheric Tap Room back two centuries. Costumed wait staff as well as British "soldiers" and local "militia" add to the authenticity.

1814 Candlelight Supper May 9

Savor a culinary experience inspired by the food and drink of the early 19th century. A special menu featuring popular foods of the day will be offered in addition to a complete menu of seasonal fare and ‘Gris’ classics. While served by costumed wait staff, enjoy period classical music performed by an accomplished trio playing the cello, viola, and violin. Reservations recommended, 860.767.1776.

British Raid on Essex 1814 -2014 Bicentennial Commemoration Parade + Muster

May 10th ~ Hosted and led by the Sailing Masters of 1812, a fife and drum corps, this beloved parade commemorating the British Raid on Essex 1814, steps off at the Essex Town Hall on West Avenue and musically wends its way down Main Street concluding at the Foot of Main for a brief muster. The Parade will be followed by a re-enactment of the events that took place on the waterfront 200 years ago. This annual parade, also known as the Burning of the Ships Parade, is in its 47th year!

British Raid on Essex 1814 -2014 Bicentennial Commemoration: Historic Cruises

May 10th ~ Follow the route the British took on the Connecticut River during their sneak attack on Essex and learn more about battle site locations on a fascinating narrated and scenic cruise aboard RiverQuest. Excursions last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Both depart from the waterfront at the foot of Main Street, Essex.
